How Elf Freedom Shaped Their New Album Visions of Utopia
And How “Visions of Utopia” Shaped Elf Freedom
Dusk came, and the sun dropped on the horizon over the burnt, sable, silhouette chimneys sticking out of the charred rubble remains of the San Gabriel Mountain Range foothill town of Altadena, California, U.S.A.
In an ancient vacant barn hayloft in the distance, the coned magnetic coils were lifted on the literary shelves at a perfect equilateral triangle aimed at my brain. A distraction? An escape? Perhaps.
The new Elf Freedom album Visions of Utopia sent electricity through transparent flexible gold tubes stuffed with spun, hair-thick, copper=positive, nickel=negative wire.
Science-designed enclosures ricocheted the sound off the back wall through the ports into the atmosphere. The aural smoke floated past my sideburns through the fine hairs of my ears like morning fog through a coastal forest.
Elf Freedom weaves through waves of layered frequencies like salamanders through clover, colliding softly with rhythms like translucent water dog newts swimming just below the surface of a floating, veined placenta like scoby in a vat of intoxicants.
The voyage of this album launched in Lindesberg, under the curious eyes of Swedes. Like scientists they scribbled into their notebooks, periodically straining stares through their microscopes at these strange, wayward, shipwrecked global travelers.
The fermented bottle was smashed on the hull and the Swedes pushed the vessel into the waves.

Bee Appleseed’s double vision voice blends into his vertical stereo-goggled guitar while Nora Keyes’ soft siren poetry calls to join the voyage and get on the hovering gossamer ship. Elf Freedom picked up dubious, often lost passengers along their swaying, listing nautical course, adding more sympathetic textures and vibrations filling the salvation of the ballast until it reached its final port, cutting through the smog of 17 lane freeways, lowering anchor in East Los Angeles.
Mitchell Brown’s modular synth illuminated the landing strip.
How did Elf Freedom avoid famine and plague? What sacred cargo did they deliver?
You are invited to submit subconscious questions throughout your sonic immersion (as I did).
When not delivering mind-shifting albums, Elf Freedom can be found providing psychedelic orchestral, live musical score, to films of the century-old silent era. At diverse cultural venues like The Philosophical Research Society, The Fountain of The World Compound, Healing Force Of The Universe, Historical Monument 57, or on the top of a school bus while Metropolis is projected below the band on what was once the lettering of the bus’s past school district.
Like seismologists at a neuroscience trivia lecture ask, “Can Elf Freedom predict earthquakes?” You decide. The new album Visions of Utopia is out now.
Available on all streaming services. Including Bandcamp.
