Back into the Dream by Elephant Stone–Album Review

Elephant Stone, the Montreal-based band with a 14-year odyssey of musical exploration, has firmly established itself as a group dedicated to delving into the intricate realms of dreams and consciousness. Their sonic tapestry, evolving over the years, has become a rich and intricate form of art, capable of capturing the vast terrain of human emotion and cognition. Released on February 23rd of this year, their album, Back Into the Dream, represents the culmination of this musical evolution, offering listeners a passage through realms of introspection and wonder.

At the helm of Elephant Stone’s creative force is Rishi Dhir, whose innate ability to bare his soul through music allows him to plumb the depths of his vulnerabilities and musings. “I’m often caught in the web of intense, recurring dreams, which I think reflect my ongoing quest for identity and a sense of belonging,” shares Rishi, offering a glimpse into the deeply personal inspiration behind the album.

The album’s auditory journey begins with “The Spark,” an invitation to explore the depths of self-exploration and transcendence. Rishi’s admission of frequently wandering thoughts speaks to the universal experience of feeling somewhat unmoored in life—a sentiment echoed throughout the album’s compositions.

Back Into the Dream transcends mere music; it’s a complex orchestration of emotions, ideas, and existential inquiries. Tracks like “Going Underground,” “History Repeating,” and the enigmatic “BAE” promise to evoke a kaleidoscope of sentiments within listeners, drawing them deeper into the band’s introspective exploration. Singles such as “Godstar,” “The Imajinary, Nameless Everybody in the World,” and “Lost In A Dream” have already set a tone of anticipation for what is poised to be a groundbreaking album.

Elephant Stone’s signature sitar vibes are complemented by echoes of free jazz, particularly evident in tracks like “Pilgrimage” and “The Imajinary, Nameless Everybody In The World.” This innovative fusion adds yet another layer to the band’s already diverse musical palette, showcasing their willingness to push boundaries and experiment with new sounds.

Supporting the rich soundscape of Elephant Stone are the stalwarts of the band: Miles Dupire on drums, Jason Kent handling keys and guitar, and Robbie MacArthur on guitar. Together, they ensure that each song—from the introspective “Pilgrimage” to the anthemic “On Our Own” and reflective “Another Year Gone”—stands as a testament to Elephant Stone’s constant evolution and unwavering commitment to musical exploration.

Back Into the Dream revolves around the enigma of dreams—whether they serve as subconscious murmurings or portals to parallel universes—encapsulating the eternal cycle of waking and dreaming. “We’re perpetually oscillating between two realms, trying to comprehend each,” reflects Rishi. “If our music can serve as a bridge between these worlds, then we’ve accomplished our mission.”

Embark on a transformative journey with Elephant Stone and allow their music to seamlessly guide you Back Into the Dream, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, and introspection reigns supreme.
