Remezcla by Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – EP Review

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete is releasing Remezcla, an expanded version of an EP by the same name that came out in September of last year. The EP consisted of remixes off their acclaimed record Datura. The material on this EP is available for the first time on vinyl, the most significant addition to the rollout of this release apart from two new remixes. While remix-based EPs can sometimes be hit-or-miss, often resulting in underwhelming tracks that should be overlooked entirely, Remezcla manages to avoid this fate for the most part.

Invisible Dog’s remix of “Ovalo” infuses a fresh and engaging vibe into the original track, delivering a unique blend of funk and smooth rhythm. A powerful guitar riff adds an edge to the soundscape, while layered synth lines create an atmospheric finish that rounds off the track. Notably, the interplay between bass and synth elements stands out, bringing dynamic depth to the piece. The percussion serves as a flexible backbone, weaving through each layer and effectively tying the composition together with a compelling, cohesive flow.

“Arco”, also remixed by Invisible Dog, leans into a moody atmosphere with crunchy, experimental percussion lending a distinctive edge to this cut’s texture. The hook maintains a rigid tightness and comes off feeling overly polished, pulling away from the raw, immersive quality that defines the rest of the track, which redeems itself by gradually unfolding into something genuinely captivating and beautiful near the halfway mark, showcasing a layered, evolving sound until the track fades out.

The remixes of the standard, previously released edition of this EP are also varied and captivating. “Datura”, remixed by MEMORIALS is funky, clashing and building between tight basslines and exaggerated synths that wail over crashing percussion. The remix of “Invisible” by Immersion presents a funky and refreshing arpeggiated sound, seamlessly glued together by the angelic lyrics of lead singer Lorena Quintanilla and lush, ethereal instrumentation.

In sum, Remezcla by Lorelle Meets the Obsolete succeeds in breathing new life into the already lauded Datura with remixes that offer fresh interpretations and a satisfying aural depth. Remixes from the various artists reinterpret the essence of Lorelle Meets the Obsolete’s original tracks, showcasing diverse influences and styles that enrich the listening experience. This release caps a significant chapter in Lorelle the Obsolete’s discography and is a solid listen to fans and newcomers.

Remezcla is available on Lorelle Meets The Obsolete’s Bandcamp page as a limited edition vinyl EP (currently sold out) and also as a digital download at https://obsoletelorelle.bandcamp.com/album/remezcla
