New Music: Dancing the Same Dance by Misha Chylkova

Friday, November 15, 2024, marks the release of Dancing the Same Dance, the debut album by Czech-born singer-songwriter Misha Chylkova. Blending psych, dream, indie, and folk-rock influences, Chylkova developed her musical style while living in London. The album, which follows the release of the singles “Sparrows” and “The Loop,” is available on vinyl, CD, and digital formats through Gare Du Nord Records.

Dancing the Same Dance features songs written over several years, exploring themes of repetition and emotional cycles. Recorded primarily in London, the album includes contributions from Darren Hayman (Hefner) and Ian Button (Death in Vegas, Thrashing Doves), who formed the rhythm section, as well as Jonathan Clayton (Hurtling, Jim Bob), who co-produced, mixed, and mastered the record. The album’s sound draws on influences such as Low, Angel Olsen, Black Heart Procession, and Suicide, combining melodic structures with looping rhythms.

Lyrically, the album reflects on the cycles of love and relationships—from infatuation and obsession to betrayal and renewal. Chylkova uses these patterns as a lens to examine human behavior, incorporating personal experiences alongside broader themes.

Chylkova describes the album as “a story with a beginning, middle, and end—but is the end really the end?”

Born in the Czech Republic and now based in London, Chylkova began her musical journey in the city’s anti-folk scene, collaborating with artists like The Awkward Silences, David Cronenberg’s Wife, and Extradition Order. In 2020, she began working with Hayman, Button, and Clayton, releasing several singles through Gare Du Nord Records in 2021 and 2022. Dancing the Same Dance is the culmination of this collaboration, showcasing her distinct blend of melodic minimalism and introspective songwriting.
