In this Psychedelic Scene Podcast episode, Dr. Matthew Gamble hosts and interviews Sunny Strasburg about her background as an early adopter of psychedelic medicine and her experiences with plant medicine ceremonies in Central America and Costa Rica, while delving into the healing properties and holistic benefits of psychedelic medicine.
Sunny Strasburg, LMFT, a licensed psychotherapist, educator, speaker, and pioneering author, specializes in psychedelic therapies and training clinicians to be skilled and trauma-informed psychedelic therapists. As the founder of The Theradelic Approach, she equips clinicians with trauma-informed psychedelic-assisted therapy methods, blending IFS, EMDR, archetypal psychology, trauma-informed care, and her extensive experience.
“I’ve been a trauma therapist for 20 years, and I just started feeling like I was an emotional janitor cleaning up after this very toxic system, right, where this trauma was being perpetuated. And I’m just working with one person at a time, trying to help them kind of mop up the mess.
So I started thinking about in a systems way, how could I have more impact with my work? So I started working with leaders and people that are disseminating the cultural narratives that we’re in working with people in Silicon Valley tech people, people in finance, people in government positions and working with them and helping them connect to their own trauma.
Because if we use “ifs” language, you know, if people are making decisions that impact billions of people from traumatized protectors or traumatized exile parts which are in ifs, the hurt, traumatized young parts that we hold.
If they’re coming to the world and their decision making and impact from traumatized parts, that is infecting everyone with that. And so, if I could help those people lead with more self energy what we call an ifs, self energy, compassion, connection, calm, true courage, true confidence, could I have a greater impact in the world.
And that led me on this amazing journey of, you know, working with people like that, really thinking about what it means to make systemic change with psychedelics like large scale change in systems, and that has led working with people that are working on the Meta crisis. So you know, AI proliferation, nuclear proliferation. you know, these larger systems, thinkers and figuring out ways to to use psychedelic medicine and psychedelic assisted therapy to help unburden parts within the individual, help them understand between how their impact is between and their close systems of relationships, and then beyond how their impact affects the beyond. How can we connect people with, you know, psychedelics, for example, connect us to nature often.
And so we connect someone who’s in, you know a climate change denier to understand the impact of of what we do with the environment, and then really take that out and help them understand how they can create change in these larger systems with their impact and power that they have.
So this is something that I’m really interested in and excited about right now, and in the process of ideating how best to do that, you know, in a way that is sincere and open ended, so that people can do their own discovery and then think about ways they can impact their systems of influence.”
