Artist Spotlight: Ivan Ivanov
Ivan Ivanov Ivanov is a Bulgarian-American contemporary painter and tattoo artist based in Chicago. His work moves between figurative oil painting and abstraction, exploring the distance between the world we can see and the inner world we spend our lives trying to understand.
His ongoing body of work, Dissonant Pleasantries, begins with a contradiction – the simultaneous beauty and discomfort of being alive. The paintings deal with order and chaos, control and surrender, isolation and human connection, and the way suffering, love, fear and compassion can exist alongside one another in ordinary life.
At the center of the process is an ongoing conversation with the self.
Rather than beginning with a predetermined image, a painting often starts with an intuitive mark and the need to respond to it. That response creates another problem, possibility or decision. Figures emerge and dissolve. Faces become obscured. Passages are destroyed and rebuilt. Over time, the work develops through an exchange between trained judgment and instinct, with neither allowed the final word.
These intuitive passages are a way of reaching beyond rational thought – giving form to memories, emotions and internal states that can be difficult to put into words. The finished painting becomes not only an image, but a record of the decisions and states of mind that shaped it.

Dissonant Pleasantries also asks what remains beneath the identities, ambitions and struggles that occupy everyday life – and what might be shared between us there. Love, loss, loneliness, desire, suffering, forgiveness and compassion recur throughout the work, often as things understood more deeply through difficulty. The paintings are not intended to provide answers. They are part of a continuing attempt to better understand ourselves, connect with one another and look beyond the surface of our immediate experience.
This approach is grounded in years of classical art training. Ivan studied classical drawing and oil painting for approximately four years at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, with a focus on anatomy, value, composition and traditional European figurative painting. That training remains visible in the work, but it also provides a structure that can be disrupted. Representation creates the foundation – intuition is free to interfere with it.
The resulting paintings move between realism, figurative painting and abstraction. Recognizable bodies and faces are interrupted by saturated color, raw marks, fragmented imagery and layers of paint. Carefully rendered areas can sit directly beside gestures made in seconds, allowing precision and spontaneity to exist within the same image.
Dissonant Harmonies, the first major painting to emerge from the series, developed over approximately four years without a fixed preliminary composition. The painting accumulated decisions, reversals, destruction, reconstruction and discoveries that could not have been planned in advance.

The drawings, studies, fragments and visual experiments that developed alongside the paintings have also been preserved rather than treated simply as preparation to be discarded. Together, they reveal ideas that were pursued, abandoned, transformed or rediscovered as the larger body of work developed.
Alongside painting, Ivan has worked professionally for more than six years as a black-and-grey realism tattoo artist. Tattooing demands precision, control and an awareness of permanence. Painting creates room for a different kind of process – one in which uncertainty, accident and surrender can become part of making the image.
Dissonant Pleasantries remains an ongoing investigation rather than a conclusion – an attempt to understand the self, reach toward others and discover what can emerge when control gives way to intuition.
