Cheval Fou’s Psychedelic Legacy
On January 10, 2024, the renowned label PQR-Disques plusqueréel proudly presented the release of the self-titled album Cheval Fou by the influential psychedelic outfit Cheval Fou. The album, available in the timeless format of a 180g vinyl LP with a splatter design, boasts a distinctive poster cover measuring 60×60.
This exclusive release, limited to only 300 numbered copies, features a meticulously remastered collection of Cheval Fou’s salvaged recordings. As an added treat, the vinyl includes bonus tracks accessible through a download card. Additionally, 50 of the copies come with the exclusive Fouart Gallery, consisting of six printed ‘Postcards from the Edge.’
Cheval Fou, a significant presence in the French underground scene during the first half of the 1970s, played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of psychedelic music. The band, a precursor to the well-known space-rock formation NYL, delivered a pure and authentic free-form, freak-out psychedelia that left an indelible mark on music enthusiasts.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of Group 1850’s Agemo and Amon Duul’s Phallus Dei, Cheval Fou’s music can be likened to a horse-headed ballerina in far-out space, delivering drones with playfully sinister ferocity on a flying chessboard. The band’s five-year-long, intensely creative existence remained a distant echo of an entire scene’s unconscious, making their recordings a rare and cherished find.
In homage to Cheval Fou’s contributions to the psychedelic genre, PQR-Disques plusqueréel has curated this limited edition vinyl release. The splatter vinyl, coupled with the open stargate to bonus tracks, is enclosed in a fold-out poster cover, creating a collector’s item that captures the essence of Cheval Fou’s artistic legacy.
With only 300 copies available, this release serves as a testament to Cheval Fou’s enduring influence and contribution to the rich tapestry of psychedelic music. The inclusion of the Fouart Gallery adds an extra layer of exclusivity for the inner circle of collector friends, making this vinyl LP a must-have for enthusiasts of the genre.
