Microdosing After 50
Microdosing is often discussed in younger wellness circles. But an increasing number of people over 50 are asking a different question: Could this help with life transitions?
Microdosing After 50: A Conversation About Curiosity, Intention, and Life Transitions
Interest in psychedelics has grown significantly in recent years. Research institutions like Johns Hopkins, NYU, and Stanford have brought new attention to the potential psychological effects of substances like psilocybin.
But much of the public conversation focuses on younger audiences.
In this episode of the Psychedelic Scene Podcast, Jill Sitnick speaks with Cesar Marin, a former CNN producer who began exploring microdosing in his mid-50s. Today he focuses on helping others over 50 learn about the topic in a thoughtful, responsible way.
Their conversation explores what often happens during midlife transitions, why curiosity around microdosing is increasing, and how intention plays a central role in responsible psychedelic exploration.
Why Are More People Over 50 Becoming Curious About Microdosing?
Many people reach their 50s facing a series of transitions:
- Career shifts or layoffs
- Children leaving home
- Divorce or relationship changes
- Health and aging concerns
- Questions about meaning and purpose
These changes can create space for reflection.
For some people, that reflection leads to curiosity about tools that might support personal growth or emotional insight.
Marin explains that many people in his generation grew up during the “Just Say No” era, where psychedelics were framed only as dangerous drugs.
Now, decades later, new research and public discussion are prompting people to reconsider what they thought they knew.
What Exactly Is Microdosing?
Microdosing refers to taking very small amounts of a psychedelic substance.
The goal is not to produce a noticeable psychedelic experience.
Instead, people who explore microdosing typically report subtle shifts such as:
- Increased mindfulness
- Greater emotional awareness
- More intentional daily habits
- Improved focus or creativity
However, Marin emphasizes an important point.
Microdosing should not be viewed as a quick fix.
Instead, he frames it as part of a larger personal growth process.
The “40–20–40” Framework for Psychedelic Work
One of Marin’s key ideas is what he calls the 40–20–40 model.
He explains that the psychedelic experience itself is only a small part of the process.
40% — Preparation (Mindset & Intention)
Why are you exploring this? What are you hoping to learn or understand?
20% — The Experience
The actual psychedelic or microdosing experience.
40% — Integration
What do you do with what you learn?
According to Marin, the integration phase is often the most important.
This is where people reflect, adjust habits, and apply insights to everyday life.
Why Intention Matters
A major theme in the conversation is intentionality.
Marin contrasts intentional psychedelic use with his earlier relationship with cannabis, which he describes as dependency without purpose.
Intentional use, on the other hand, involves:
- clear goals
- thoughtful preparation
- integration afterward
Without those elements, he believes the experience often lacks value.
Microdosing and Midlife Perspective
One of the most powerful ideas Marin shares is how his perspective on time changed after turning 50.
He explains it this way:
At 40, it can feel like life stretches far ahead.
At 50, many people begin realizing that the years ahead may be fewer than the years behind.
That awareness can shift priorities toward:
- meaningful relationships
- health and wellbeing
- purposeful work
- living fully in the present moment
For Marin, microdosing became part of cultivating that awareness.
Responsible Curiosity
For those who are psychedelic-curious, Marin offers one consistent recommendation:
Ask questions and seek education.
Rather than rushing into experimentation, he encourages people to:
- learn from credible sources
- engage with thoughtful communities
- approach the topic with care and responsibility
He also stresses that microdosing is not necessary for personal growth.
It is simply one potential tool among many.
