Podcast: Dr. Gamble Interviews Cody Gibbons of Sensoria

In this interview, Cody Gibbons discusses the exploration of legal jurisdictions for conducting experiments with psychoactive substances aimed at enhancing social cohesion. He highlights the well-documented effects of MDMA in fostering deep interpersonal bonds, saving relationships, and occasionally creating ephemeral romantic connections.

Beyond MDMA, Gibbons introduces other compounds with similar social-enhancing properties, such as 3-MMC and 5-MAPB. While these substances are synthetic, he speculates they might exist in nature, drawing parallels to ketamine, which was once considered purely synthetic until trace amounts were discovered in a plant. He also challenges the notion that naturally occurring substances are inherently superior, asserting that human synthesis is a natural process in itself.

Gibbons touches on the broader implications of these substances in understanding human bonding. He argues that society lacks a deep comprehension of the neurological and emotional mechanisms behind empathy and connection. If such knowledge were harnessed, it could strengthen relationships and create more cohesive communities, potentially diminishing the necessity of money-based economies. He references existing small-scale communities that thrive without currency but notes the difficulty of scaling such systems due to ingrained tribalistic behaviors.

The conversation also references the work of Alexander and Ann Shulgin, pioneers in the study of MDMA, particularly in its application within communal and therapeutic settings. Gibbons envisions Sensoria, a project aimed at studying and applying these compounds in controlled environments to better understand and enhance human connectivity. His discussion underscores the vast and largely untapped potential of psychoactive substances in transforming social structures and improving collective well-being.
